FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

There are five basic classes of fire extinguishers in addition to the multipurpose ones (ABC, AB and BC). 

§         CLASS A – ordinary combustibles, many contain water and should not be used on flaming liquids or electrical fires

§         CLASS B – for fires of flammable and combustible liquids, greases or gases; those containing foams are not intended for electrical fires

§         CLASS C – for electrical equipment, contains nonconducting extinguishing agents

§         CLASS D  - for combustible metals; contain special agents that form a crust on the metal

§         CLASS K – for restaurants

Hand-held extinguishers are of limited capacity and are helpful at the inception of a fire.  All employees should be trained in their use.  The following guidelines should be followed:

§         Extinguishes should be UL approved

§         Located in a readily accessible location, labeled with instructions as to use and the type of fire they are intended for

§         Inspected at least once a month and recharged annually or after any use.
