SLIPS TRIPS AND FALLS

In public places, slip and falls occur more frequently than any other type of accident.

Hazardous conditions that contribute to slip, trip and fall hazards include:

§         Slippery surfaces – Naturally slippery surfaces should have appropriate finishes applied to reduce slipperiness.

§         Uneven surfaces – a ridge of ½ inch or more is sufficient to cause tripping. These should be corrected to provide a smooth walking surface.

§         Debris on walking surfaces – Regular inspections of all public areas should be conducted to eliminate any debris

§         Inadequate lighting

§         Poor maintenance – Natural settling, cracks, uneven wear need to be corrected on an ongoing basis.

§         Adverse weather – Area must be inspected and cleared as soon as possible after snow, ice or water.

All construction should conform to local and state building codes.  Areas should be inspected regularly, and details of inspections should be kept. In addition, any complaints should be handled promptly, with corrective action carefully recorded.

In addition to the above, restaurants seem to be a chronic source of claims.  The following additional items should be carefully monitored:

  • Damaged or defective seating.
  • Spilled food
  • Storage and loading areas.
  • Steps – patrons are often distracted. These areas should be well illuminated
  • Isles that are partially blocked with tables, carts or similar items.
  • Damaged or defective floor coverings.
