STAIRCASES

Injuries on staircases are a major cause of severe losses.  Some common design and maintenance problems include

§         Uneven or non-standard stair height

§         Lack of handrails, or poorly maintained handrails

§         Inadequate illumination

§         Slippery steps

§         Worn surface on steps, or missing “non-slip” surface

§         No warning signs for horseplay, jumping etc. in areas where kids may be present

In addition, the landings at the top, bottom and intermediate areas must be of adequate size and include guard rails where appropriate.
