AUTO ACCIDENTS – Procedures after an accident Proper procedures to follow in the event of an accident should be communicated to all drivers. The driver may be under extreme stress at the accident scene. The initial actions of the driver are critical to minimizing the effects of the accidents. Here are some guidelines to follow: § Stop immediately – failure to stop is a criminal offense § Protect the scene – place emergency warning devices, move the vehicle out of traffic and turn on emergency flashers. § Assist the injured – do not move any injured person unless it is absolutely necessary to prevent further injury. To reduce shock, keep them warm and quiet. § Notify the police. Once the police are on the scene, cooperate with the investigation by providing only the facts of the accident. § Get and record all the facts. Get the names, addresses and phone umbers of witnesses. Get information from everyone involved in the accident including insurance information, passenger names and addresses. Do not discuss the accident with anyone except the employer, police and insurance company. § Take photos if possible with a disposable camera. Take photos from several angles including roadway signs that may have contributed to the accident.
